The Managing Global Insecurity (MGI) project visited Beijing, China March 19-21 to elicit Chinese priorities and perspectives on international cooperation and revitalization of the multilateral security system. The visit, one of a series of consultations MGI is conducting in key international capitals, included meetings with government officials, Party leaders, policymakers, scholars, students and private sector representatives. This meeting, which included International Advisory Group members as well as Asia regional experts, focused on an effective multilateral response on the topics of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, energy security and global climate change. Participants also discussed Asian regional security institutions. While in Asia, MGI project directors also held consultations in Tokyo and Delhi with government officials and representatives from non-governmental organizations, think tanks, and the private sector. Speech by UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband

Following consultations with the Managing Global Insecurity Co-directors in London, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband delivered a speech during a visit to China February 20 in which he referenced what MGI is putting forward as the core principle that must underpin a revitalized multilateral security system: “responsible sovereignty,” the idea that sovereignty entails obligations and duties towards other sovereign states as well as to one’s own citizens. The Brookings Institution, Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, and New York University’s Center on International Cooperation have established a joint project entitled Managing Global Insecurity (MGI). The goal of MGI is to provide recommendations and generate momentum for the next American President, the United Nations, and key international partners to launch a strategic effort to build the global partnerships and international institutions needed to meet 21st Century trans-border challenges and threats.  Read more.
