About the Global Institute
The Global Institute (GI) is a strategic initiative of leading research-based think tanks in transition and developing countries. An initiative of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE), in partnership with the Brookings Institution, GI aims to set the highest standard for research and policy analysis in these countries. GI supports its members in managing cross-country research, building policy impact by disseminating new evidence, funding activities, and offering mentorship to younger, aspiring institutions.
GI is led by Erik Berglöf, Senior Fellow at Brookings and Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and Strobe Talbott, the President of Brookings.
Engaging the Next Generation of Talent
The Global Institute engages a new generation of thinkers in transition and developing countries. Young talents returning home from training abroad have built new environments for advanced research and policy analysis. Today, they are speaking with authority in the global debate over their countries' futures. The Global Institute links together these inspiring centers of excellence.
Despite a worldwide proliferation of think tanks and networks in the last few decades, efforts to link centers of excellence have been either regional or topical, or loose conglomerations that lack synergies, common standards and goals, or the means of achieving these. GI builds upon a core group of top research institutions working actively to support informed decision-making in both national and international policy arenas, placing a strong emphasis on quality and innovation in research from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.
GI emphasizes quality and innovation in research, facilitating data collection and utilization of advanced analytical tools. We have a strong economics focus, but are interested in integrating other disciplines, such as politics, law and sociology, in our academic and policy work. GI also promotes the global dissemination of experience from emerging market economies. We provide additional value by taking a uniquely comprehensive approach to linking members closely through a series of regularly scheduled, ongoing collaborative activities.

Our Core Activities
Research: GI promotes collaboration among member institutes in specialized, large-scale multi-country studies in which advanced methodologies are used to gather new evidence and gain fresh insights into the determinants of development and successful transition.
Policy engagement: GI helps integrate the output of its members into the national and international policy processes by building working relationships with key decision-makers and interacting with them in workshops and joint projects.
Dissemination: GI wants to increase awareness of the latest evidence-based analysis in international publications and meetings, by working with members to define and tap priority dissemination channels.
Associates: The Global Institute encourages its members to reach out to other centers that aspire both to achieve the highest standard of quality in research and to make important contributions to the international debate about development and growth.
