Illinois has two of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas—Chicago and St. Louis—which alone account for 73 percent of the state’s population, 75 percent of the state’s jobs, and 82 percent of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP). All 11 of Illinois’s metros constitute 87 percent of the state’s population, 89 percent of the state’s jobs, and 93 percent of the state’s GDP.
