California has ten of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas—Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Riverside, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, Oxnard, Bakersfield, and Stockton—which alone account for 85 percent of the state’s population, 87 percent of the state’s jobs, and 90 percent of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP). All 26 of California’s metros constitute 98 percent of the state’s population, 98 percent of the state’s jobs, and 99 percent of the state’s GDP.
