This work is the culmination of three years of discussions with individuals from the Trilateral regions and other East Asian countries, including China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, focusing on the role East Asia plays in the international system and how that role will develop in the coming years. Topics covered include security, economic and political development, institution-building, and cultural issues.

Charles E. Morrison
Charles E. Morrison is president of the East-West Center. He is a founding member of the U.S. National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation and member of the U.S. Committee for Security Cooperation in Asia-Pacific.
Wendy K. Dobson
Wendy K. Dobson is Professor and Director of the Institute for International Business at the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto. She is non-exeutive director of a number of public companies in financial services, advanced manufacturing, and transportation.
Michel Oksenberg
Michael Oksenberg, who passed away in February 2001, was Senior Fellow at the Asia Pacific Research Center and Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. His research specialties included Chinese domestic affairs, China's foreign policy, Sino-American relations, and East Asian political development.
Hisashi Owada
Hisashi Owada, former Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, is President of the Japan Institute of International Affairs and Advisor to the Foreign Minister. He is also Professor of International Law and Organization at Waseda University. Before going to the United Nations, he was Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Owada is currently a professor at New York University Law School.
Hadi Soesastro
Hadi Soesastro is a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, where he has served as Head of the Economics Department, Director of Studies, and Executive Director. He has written extensively on energy issues, international trade, regional cooperation (ASEAN, APEC), and the relationship between economics and security.
