Is the Recession Over?
A mix of economic indicators released last week showed positive economic growth but also a plunge in consumer spending. Brookings experts responded to the mixed news with analysis of the uneven recovery. Karen Dynan testified on how consumer spending is likely to continue to be weak. Wealth losses, she says, will dampen consumption growth this year by 2 to 3.5 percent.
The Cap-and-Trade Debate
Momentum for legislation to address climate change is increasing on Capitol Hill. With international negotiations slated for Copenhagen in December, many view U.S. action on this issue as critical to a successful outcome. Brookings experts examine proposals to cap and trade emissions as well as related climate issues.
The President's Asia Trip
President Barack Obama arrives in Tokyo on November 12, beginning his first visit to Asia as president. On November 6, Brookings hosts a discussion of the issues he is likely to face on the trip. Jeffrey Bader, special assistant to the president and senior director for East Asian affairs on the National Security Council, will provide a keynote address.
