Restoring Prosperity Brookings-London School of Economics Case Studies

As part of the Restoring Prosperity Initiative, Brookings has engaged in a trans-Atlantic partnership with the London School of Economics (LSE). The purpose of this partnership is to share learning about the major demographic and market forces shaping older industrial regions in the United States and Europe, and to identify policy reforms needed on both continents to reinvigorate these communities’ economies. As part of this effort, the LSE has conducted studies of revitalization efforts under way in seven cities in six countries in the EU and UK (Belfast, Sheffield, St Etienne, Bilbao, Torino, Bremen, and Leipzig). Brookings, in turn, has undertaken similar case studies on Akron, Chattanooga, and Louisville. These reports are useful learning tools not only for the case study cities themselves, but for other older industrial communities struggling to reinvent themselves.
