Any effort to boost U.S. exports must connect the macroeconomic goal with the metropolitan reality of export production. "Export Nation," an analysis of U.S. exports of goods and services produced in America’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, examines the baseline and shows a possible way forward by leveraging U.S. metropolitan strengths to reset the nation’s economic trajectory. The report has two companion pieces focusing on exports in the Great Lakes and Intermountain West regions respectively. Analyzing data related to the American Community Survey, Andrew Reamer finds that $416 billion in federal assistance was distributed to states, counties, cities, and individuals in fiscal year 2008. Since the ACS helps determine the distribution of 29 percent of all federal assistance, including 69 percent of federal grants funding, policymakers have much to gain from a more accurate survey.
