Turkish democracy faces a constitutional crisis amid fears that the ruling Islamic party will undermine secular ideals. Hundreds of thousands have protested the selection of a presidential candidate whose wife covers her head. On May 1, 2007, Diane Rehm hosted Mark R. Parris, Director of Turkey 2007 and Yasemin Congar, Washington bureau chief and columnist for the Turkish newspaper Milliyet to discuss the present and future issues in Turkey.
