| The endeavors included in this project were identified through a careful winnowing process that began with the sifting of major federal legislation into broad public policy goals. The list of the top 50 endeavors offers insight into the federal government's enormous policy agenda of the past half-century. During the summer of 2000, historians and political scientists from across the nation completed a survey to rank the federal government's success on these endeavors. The next year, the nation's historians and political scientists, joined this time by sociologists and economists, completed a survey to rank federal government's priorities for the future.
We hope the lists, surveys, reports, videos, lectures, links, and other resources on this site create a portrait of government effectiveness that inspires considerable debate and further scholarship about where and when government succeeds and what direction it should take for the future.
