Class Study Guides
These class study guides were designed to help college instructors
integrate materials from the Government’s 50
Greatest Achievements of the Past Half Century project into introductory and upper division American history and government
courses. The guides offer lecture topics, themes
for discussion, research paper topics, a sample
lecture, and the outline for a module.
The guide for history
classes was written by Dr. Robert S. Weisbrot,
Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Teaching
Professor of History at Colby College and author
of Freedom Bound: A History of America’s
Civil Rights Movement (1991) and John F.

science classes was written by Dr. Janet M.
Martin, professor of government at Bowdoin College
and author of Lessons from the Hill: The
Legislative Journey of an Education Program
(1994) and The American Presidency and Women: Promise, Performance and Illusion
