Portrait: Cesare Merlini

Cesare Merlini is a nonresident senior fellow with the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings. He is also chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Italian Institute for International Affairs in Rome, where he was president for many years. Until the end of 2009, he was executive vice chairman of the Council for the United States and Italy, an organization he co-founded in 1983. His areas of expertise include transatlantic relations, European integration, nuclear non-proliferation and, more recently, the impact of societal change on international relations.
