“The next president will inherit a record federal budget deficit, estimated at $482 billion. In fact, the real number could be much closer to $600 billion when you factor in all the government outlays such as the war, the new housing bill, unemployment compensation, and the recently-enacted Medicare doctor fee adjustment. That’s a high number, and it will impact how the new president sets his policy priorities. It also has national security implications when ¾ of our deficits are financed overseas.”
