The Certificate in Public Leadership

Earn a unique credential and add distinction and prestige to your resume with our Certificate in Public Leadership. This program of study is designed to equip America’s best and brightest with a solid grounding in the core competencies required to excel in 21st century leadership. Every executive education class you take with us will build toward your certificate, allowing you to maximize the value of your Brookings experience. 

There is no timeline or sequence for Certificate studies: start when you want, select your own curriculum, and finish when it suits you or when budgets allow.

The Certificate in Public Leadership is open exclusively to government participants.

Requirements

In order to be awarded a Certificate in Public Leadership, you must complete a total of 20 course days with Executive Education at Brookings. The curriculum includes two mandatory foundational courses (8 days total):  

The remaining 12 study days can be spent at any Brookings course, including custom programs. There is no time limit or sequence for completing the 20 days of classroom learning. If you are an alumnus, any courses you have taken since 2004 will be automatically credited to your transcript.

Curriculum

There are two required courses that underpin the Certificate curriculum: Leadership Lab (or Executive Leadership in a Changing Environment for senior leaders) and Leading with Integrity: Ethics in Action. These courses provide an intensive and in-depth examination of critical leadership competencies, equipping participants to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing public leaders today. Our foundational leadership courses have been carefully designed to broaden participants' comprehension and skills at challenging stages of their careers. This foundation also provides a renewed and enhanced perception of public service values. 

Certificate candidates may choose their remaining 12 days of coursework from among any of our Inside Government, Critical Issues, or Leadership Development course offerings. Custom programs may also fulfill the elective requirement. Participants are encouraged to enroll in the programs that match their strengths, personal or professional goals, interests, or development needs.
