As past participants in Brookings Executive Education programs know, our leadership programs address the OPM Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) of "Leading Change" and "Leading People." BEE's recent partnership with the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis provides us with resources to extend our offerings to help people hone their skills within the ECQ clusters of “Business Acumen” and “Results Driven.”

Brookings Executive Education has recently begun offering short, one- to two-day workshops on the OPM competencies for the Senior Executive Service (SES). These courses form the pilot program for a new lineup of programs—SES Pathways. This series will instruct to each competency, and will include a path to help prepare individuals for SES positions.

The next SES Pathways course to be offered is Problem Solving & Critical Thinking, a two-day course coming up on Dec. 9-10, 2009.

The new relationship between Brookings and Washington University could be considered a reunion of old friends. At the turn-of-the-last-century, St. Louis businessman Robert S. Brookings founded the D.C.-based think tank and, as leader of Washington University’s governing board for 33 years, laid the foundation for the university to become the world-renowned institution it is today. After helping to found the Institute for Government Research (IGR)—the forerunner of the Brookings Institution—in 1916, Mr. Brookings established the Graduate School of Economics and Government in Washington, D.C., as part of Washington University in 1923. Washington University in St. Louis has a longstanding reputation for scholarship and innovation in science, medicine, business and the arts. Its faculty members’ research distinguishes them in their fields; the faculty has included 22 Nobel laureates.
