History
For half a century, the Brookings Institution has delivered exemplary educational experiences for government and corporate executives. Our mission is to provide public and private sector leaders with practical and relevant education in support of their professional and personal goals.
The theme of education has been central to Brookings's mission since its founding in 1916, when it was known as the Institute of Government Research. IGR merged with the Institute of Economics and the Robert Brookings Graduate School in 1927 to form the Brookings Institution.
In 1952, Robert Calkins became president of the Brookings Institution and reestablished the graduate fellowship program. Calkins also emphasized the need for programs to train government executives as a means of strengthening public service. The Conference for Federal Executives was established to give executives a broader understanding of government and their role in it.
By the mid 1960s, Brookings had approximately 100 ongoing research projects and conducted public policy conferences that reached several thousand senior government officials, business executives, and professionals each year. Under Brookings President Bruce MacLaury's leadership in the 1980s, the Center for Public Policy Education (CPPE) was formed to develop workshop conferences and public forums to broaden the audience for research programs. In 2005, the Center was renamed the Brookings Center for Executive Education (BCEE), which was shortened to Brookings Executive Education (BEE) with the launch of the partnership with the Olin Business School.
Brookings Executive Education programs in global issues, U.S. policy-making, and public leadership continue to further Brookings's goal of helping government executives better understand and effectively engage with the world around them. In recent years, the audience for our seminars has also broadened to include substantial participation from the corporate sector, foreign embassies, and international governments, which has expanded the reach and impact of Brookings.
