The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) oversees intellectual property enforcement, promotes trademark and patent protection domestically and globally, and is a leading force in U.S. innovation policy. With Congress, the administration, the legal community, and industry eager to implement new approaches to innovation law and the nation’s patent filing and protection system, the USPTO will play a key role in these efforts.

On January 22, Governance Studies at Brookings hosted USPTO Deputy Director Michelle K. Lee – who is currently awaiting Senate confirmation to lead the agency – to discuss the direction of the USPTO in 2015, as well as which steps the “innovation agency” is taking to put more tools in the hands of technologists and entrepreneurs. Lee highlighted key efforts underway at the USPTO and how these changes will catalyze economic growth, increase opportunities to export abroad, and inspire the next generation of American innovators.
