On September 4-5, President Obama will participate in the 2014 NATO summit in Wales along with more than 60 heads of state. Coming at a time when European security concerns have new relevance following Russia’s recent aggression, the summit has been portrayed as a decisive opportunity to underscore the Alliance’s role and reconfirm its strategic vision.

At the summit alliance leaders are expected to address a range of issues including the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine, the drawdown of the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan, commitments to defense spending targets, and NATO’s readiness to respond to emerging security challenges. Will this summit accomplish its goals? What do leaders like Obama, Merkel, Cameron and others hope to achieve and where do their perspectives differ?

On August 27, the Center for the United States and Europe held an on-the-record briefing with Brookings experts to discuss the summit and its implications on both sides of the Atlantic.
