Event Summary
The Brookings-Tsinghua Center hosted special guests James Lambright, Board Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; John McAdams, Senior Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; and Peng Aiqun of the US Commercial Service of the US Embassy in China for its “Roundtable on Opportunities and Challenges in US-China Trade Cooperation.” Dozens of participating experts and scholars represented a wide range of prestigious institutions, including Tsinghua University, the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the National Development and Reform Commission’s Institute of Economics, the Development Research Center of the State Council, the Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing Normal University, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, China International Capital Corporation Limited, the Beijing Representative Office of BNP Paribas Equities (Asia) Limited, the Export-Import Bank of China, the People's Bank of China, and Renmin University of China. Professor Geng Xiao, Director of Brookings-Tsinghua Center, chaired the conference.
Mr. Lambright began the meeting by describing the history of the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the role it plays in enhancing Sino-American trade. He expressed hope that Chinese trade and finance institutions would join the OECD. Participants reached a consensus that China would enter the related international organizations or institutions when the certain pre-conditions were met, and that China should have a voice in establishing the rules that govern these international bodies.
