Event Summary
The Brookings-Tsinghua Center hosted the second meeting of its Reforming China’s Healthcare System roundtable series. Special guest Mr. Leonard D. Schaeffer, a trustee of the Brookings Institution and the founder of WellPoint Health Networks Inc., as well as its first president and CEO, gave a presentation entitled, "The Role of Private Medical Insurance in the Development of China's Healthcare System."
Also in attendance were several scholars and practicing professionals from Tsinghua University, Harvard University, the World Health Organization, the National Development and Reform Commission’s Institute of Economics, Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, and Beijing Chaoyang District non-government medical associations. Professor Geng Xiao, Director of Brookings-Tsinghua Center, chaired the conference.
The participants had in-depth discussions on a number of issues, including the social values foundation for healthcare systems, the present status of healthcare in many countries, the role of the private medical insurance market, and the market as a means to improve the financing and structure of healthcare.
