Exploring the Role of Census Information for Urban Markets

Community Development, Cities, U.S. Census

Event Summary

KnowledgePlex and the Brookings Urban Markets Initiative will host an online discussion to examine the implications of potential cutbacks of Census programs that provide critical information on urban markets. This event is a follow-up to a Brookings Briefing held on October 14, 2005.

The U.S. Census Bureau is the nation's primary provider of data on urban populations and businesses. According to data experts, reductions in the Census Bureau budget could lead to a decrease in the availability and reliability of information vital for urban markets and communities.

The speakers will discuss the role of Census data and the implications of the prospective loss of such statistics for the work of researchers, government decisionmakers, businesses, and community developers.
