About the Conference: The Conference on Islamic Reform was held on October 5-7, by the Ibn
Khaldun Center for Development Studies in conjunction with the Saban
Center for Middle East Policy and funded in part by USIP. The workshop
brought together leading reformists representing a diverse set of
academic, media, and civil society organizations from Egypt, France,
Philippines, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, UK, and Yemen. The participants
discussed reform within Islam, the potential participation of Islamist
groups within democratic systems and the relationship between U.S
foreign policy. The conference functioned as a jumping block for
opening a dialogue between reformist leaders and the United States.
