Event Summary

On January 16-17, 2003, The Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy and the American Planning Association sponsored "Shaping the American City: New Approaches to Development Regulation." Nearly 100 participants heard panelists discuss the history of zoning, debate alternatives to contemporary zoning practice, and report on reform efforts being undertaken in Chicago, Miami-Dade County, Milwaukee, and Nashville. The event was held in Chicago, a city that is currently undertaking its first major zoning reform since 1957.
