Event Summary

A Conference on Development-Induced Displacement was convened by the Brookings-SAIS Project on Internal Displacement in Washington DC to examine the nature and scope of development-induced displacement; the international guidelines that apply, in particular the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, and policy guidelines of the World Bank, OECD and other agencies; and institutional frameworks for addressing the problem, including the most effective role for the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons and other UN bodies concerned with internal displacement.
