Israeli voters go to the polls on January 28 to elect a new government. Of primary importance in the election is what policy to follow in the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians.
The Labor Party has recently selected the dovish Amram Mitzna to be its candidate for prime minister. Polls favor incumbent Ariel Sharon to again be the candidate of the Likud Party. But he must first overcome a challenge in the primaries from Foreign Minister (and former Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu.
This pre-election briefing at Brookings will be presented by Martin Indyk, director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings, and Yaron Deckel, one of Israel's most respected political analysts. Indyk has just returned from Israel, where he met with Prime Minister Sharon and Labor Party Chairman Mitzna.
Following their presentations, they will answer questions from the audience.
