Despite their many benefits, annuities account for only 2 percent of all retirement savings. Yet a major lifetime risk is outliving one’s assets and then being forced to have a dramatically lower standard of living in the final years of life. In a new Hamilton Project paper, William G. Gale, J. Mark Iwry, David C. John and Lina Walker propose a greater annuitization of assets in 401(k) plans for a trial period of two years unless workers opted out of the program. Read More
