  • I think Detroit faces some of the toughest challenges of any American city.

March 6, 2013, Bruce Katz, The Craig Fahle Show-WDET
  • It’s not just waiting for government to do something [for the economy]. A lot of the actions that need to be taken in [Rhode Island] really could be taken by private, civic and university leaders. The economy is co-produced. It’s not produced by government. It’s produced by networks of leaders.

February 27, 2013, Bruce Katz, Rhode Island Public Radio
  • The number of people who are poor or near poor went from 81 million in 2000 to 107 million in 2010. This is like a quantum leap. It’s hard for me to understand why the nation’s decision makers don’t get up every day and recite that number every day when they’re looking in the mirror. We now have a third of our people who are poor or near poor.

    January 23, 2013, Bruce Katz, msnbc.com
  • [The] next economy [is] one that is driven by exports and global engagement. It is imperative that you … build strong, deep relationships with your trading partners ... I fundamentally believe that older industrial metropolitan areas like Buffalo have a future if you get focused, plan smart, build on your strengths, and execute with discipline and creativity.

September 28, 2012, Bruce Katz, The Epoch Times
  • [Buffalo can] lead the next economic wave, one driven by advanced manufacturing, innovation, and exports powered by low carbon.

July 28, 2012, Bruce Katz, What's New Buffalo
  • Trade policy is not just nation to nation — it's city to city.

June 24, 2012, Bruce Katz, Miami Herald
  • I think for the last 30 years, frankly, both political parties decided that the U.S. somehow would be a post-industrial economy where we would generate ideas but produce everything offshore, and I think that’s a recipe for long‑term economic decline. The silver lining to this recession is that we actually rediscovered the importance of manufacturing because it—and exports—are leading the recovery. The recession was a wake-up call, and not just for national  leaders but for state and metropolitan leaders as well.

May 1, 2012, Bruce Katz, GrayWay
