In October 2006, Brookings opened an office at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, known as the Brookings-Tsinghua Center.

The Brookings-Tsinghua Center facilitates joint and individual research projects by Chinese and American scholars focusing on economic and social issues in China's development; serves as a liaison to think-tanks, academic institutions, government officials, corporations and individual scholars in China; and hosts seminars, panels and conferences.

China’s rapid growth faces many difficult challenges, such as securing energy to fuel its economic growth, forming sound macro-economic policy and financial institutions, building a modern legal infrastructure, sustaining and balancing rural and urban development, and modernizing the country’s health care system and social welfare infrastructure.

The research agenda of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy (BTC) focuses on these challenges, and provides policy-makers with trenchant analysis and opportunities for timely dialogue.

The Center is directed by Geng Xiao.
