2013 a Terrible Year for Humanitarian Crises

In an event today to assess the global response to humanitarian crises in 2013, Elizabeth Ferris said that this past year “was a terrible year for humanitarian crises, between Syria and the Central African Republic, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, South Sudan toward the end of the year. And these crises came on top of an already long list of humanitarian emergencies.”

Ferris is co-director of the Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement, which co-hosted the discussion with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Panelists included Sophie Delaunay of MSF; Antoine Gérard, United Nations Office for the Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs; Iain Levine, Human Rights Watch; and François Stamm, International Committee for the Red Cross.
