In the fall of 2005, Governance Studies at Brookings in collaboration with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, set out to explore the polarization of politics in America. Red and Blue Nation is the result of that joint venture.
In 2006, the first project volume, Red and Blue Nation? Volume I: Characteristics and Causes of America's Polarized Politics, considered the extent to which polarized views among political leaders and activists are reflected in the population at large.
A second volume published in 2008, Red and Blue Nation? Volume II: Consequences and Correction of America's Polarized Politics, delved into the consequences of the gulf between "red states" and "blue states."
The project also sponsored numerous events and other research, available here.
