Martin Baily Named the Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in Economic Policy Development
Martin Neil Baily, senior fellow and director of the Initiative on Business and Public Policy in the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution, has been named the Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in Economic Policy Development, Brookings President Strobe Talbott announced.
As chair, Baily will publish research and hold conferences and workshops that focus on forward-looking national economic priorities, among them, job creation, U.S. economic competitiveness and productivity. He will seek to identify new economic models that could lead to sustained recovery and growth, and will host an annual Schwartz Forum for policy makers and the general public where a panel of experts will explore a specific economic challenge.
Baily served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Clinton administration. As chairman, Baily served as economic adviser to the president, was a member of the president’s Cabinet and directed the staff of this White House agency. He completed his term as chairman on January 19, 2001. During that period he also served as president of the Economic Policy Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Dr. Baily previously served as one of the three members of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers from October 1994 until August 1996. He is also a senior advisor to McKinsey & Company, assisting the McKinsey Global Institute on projects on globalization and productivity. He is an economic adviser to the Congressional Budget Office and a director of The Phoenix Companies of Hartford, CT.
Bernard L. Schwartz is chairman and CEO of BLS Investments, LLC, a private investment firm. He promotes the development of U.S. economic policy initiatives through investment in educational institutions, think tanks and advocacy organizations and has been a long-time supporter of the Brookings Institution.
