BASIC FUNCTION
Supports Senior Fellows with research relating to issues of policies and trends affecting developing countries including poverty, middle class, fragile states, foreign assistance and global governance, as well as development effectiveness, transparency, and infrastructure; helps obtain, manage, organize, and analyze large datasets on these issues; assists in the preparation of presentations, blog posts and working papers; aides in the organization of meetings and events; assists with outreach activities related to the Senior Fellows’ work; and, as needed, provides administrative assistance.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Economics required. Master’s degree preferred. Minimum one year of experience with empirical research and quantitative data analysis. Experience handling large datasets and knowledge of STATA, SAS, and related econometric packages, required. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel required. Experience working with governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on international development and economics issues is highly desirable. Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills. Competence to undertake research assignments with minimal supervision.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of development and/or international economics, applied statistics and econometrics desirable. Background in international financial institutions (IFIs) or donor aid agencies such as DfID preferred. Strong computer skills and experience required. Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals from government/international organizations. Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
95% Research Assistance
- Conducts empirical research and policy analysis on topics related to policies and trends affecting developing countries including poverty, middle class, fragile states, foreign assistance and global governance, as well as development effectiveness, transparency, and infrastructure.
- Collects, assembles, and maintains datasets for quantitative analysis within STATA and Microsoft (MS) Excel.
- Conducts quantitative data analysis, utilizing econometric and other statistical tools; compiles and organizes large datasets; writes code in STATA to operationalize analysis-methodologies; and presents the results of empirical analysis in table and graphical formats to complement MS PowerPoint presentations and published material.
- Collects and analyzes empirical and analytical information; monitors and analyzes relevant material from conferences and seminars, academic journals, and reports from a wide variety of sources, including development organizations and NGOs.
- Writes background policy and researches summary notes and reports, occasional media summaries, and briefing memos, reports on forums, symposia, and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of journals, abstracts, books, and news articles. Reviews and updates existing data and footnotes; helps with editing and proof reading of publications.
- Assists with the development, maintenance and monitoring of Global's data visualization database.
- Attends conferences and seminars as needed and prepares summaries.
05% General Assistance
- Contributes to grant-writing activities, in coordination with program staff and Fellows.
- Assists with the organization of meetings and conferences related to the Fellow’s work, in collaboration with program staff.
- Works with the program’s web site coordinator to oversee content of project-specific web pages and publications.
- Other duties as assigned.
