BASIC FUNCTION

Under the supervision of the Fellow and Director of the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World, responsible for coordinating the annual U.S.-Islamic World Forum; for planning other Project events and activities designed to educate and engage policymakers, civil society leaders, opinion-shapers, and others within the U.S. and Muslim world; and for providing administrative management of the Project.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of four years of relevant, professional experience in event coordination and project management required. Complete fluency in written and spoken English is required. Experience dealing with policy issues and with high-level personnel from both the U.S. and the Middle East strongly preferred. Knowledge of, and general interest in, U.S.-Muslim world relations preferred. Must be currently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Superb organizational and interpersonal skills; poise, tact, discretion and mature judgment to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in high-pressure atmosphere; ability to multi-task and complete tasks in a timely manner whether working independently or as part of a team; ability to effectively utilize the Internet, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

65% Coordination of Annual U.S.-Islamic World (IWR) Forum

Under the direction of the Fellow and Director of IWR:

  • Plan and manage all preparations for the U.S.-Islamic World Forum (150-person conference held annually in Doha, Qatar or Washington, DC). Develop ideas for program, speakers and participants, draft and manage invitations, coordinate with partners on media, outreach, and other aspects, and oversee all logistical arrangements (travel, accommodations, visas, etc.).
  • Liaise with Qatari counterparts, travel providers, site staff, external vendors, and others essential to implementation of the conference.
  • Recruit, select, and manage relationships with annual working group conveners; including developing, editing, and publishing working group papers, selecting participants, and managing proceedings.

35% Project Management

  • Plan and coordinate all Project events and outreach activities; oversee organization of public and private events throughout the year.
  • Work with IWR Staff Assistant to meet administrative needs for the Project, the Project Director, and any affiliated scholars.
  • Assist in crafting budgets and tracking expenditures for Project activities.
  • Participate in efforts to attract and manage funding support for the Project, which includes assisting with grant proposals and reports as requested.
  • Assist Project Director in executing research plan for the Project, including solicitation and review of proposals from outside authors.
  • Liaise with IWR’s nonresident scholars.
  • Work closely with Saban Center and Brookings Institution staff to ensure Project’s activities are carried out in accordance with guidelines and processes of the Foreign Policy program and the Institution.
