This position is based in Doha, Qatar. Because of the location and requirements of the job, a valid driver's license and willingness to drive is required. Office hours of the BDC often require an evening segment for coordination with Washington, DC conference calls, events and other purposes.
BASIC FUNCTION
Develop and implement strategies to raise funds and manage donor relations for the Brookings Doha Center (BDC), part of the Foreign Policy program at The Brookings Institution (Brookings). In coordination with the BDC Director, BDC Budget Manager, the appropriate FP and other Brookings staff, develop and implement fundraising strategies; provide stewardship; and assist with event management for program donors.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in international relations, foreign policy, political science or a related field is required. Minimum 3-5 years of relevant fundraising and stewardship experience with one or more of the following prospect pools: individuals, foundations, governments, and corporations. Written and spoken Arabic is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Superior writing skills required, including proven ability to conceive and write complex grant proposals; with excellent MS Word and Excel skills. Familiarity with or knowledge of fundraising tracking software preferred. Must possess ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, and work well with others in a fast-paced environment. Sense of initiative, discretion, mature judgment, and entrepreneurial spirit required. Some travel may be required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
65% Fundraising and Donor Relations
- Work under the supervision of the BDC Director and in coordination with the FP development team to create and implement sound strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward donors at all levels.
- Identify and research new donors for project support; assess the potential and capacity of existing and prospective donors.
- Identify and arrange meetings between BDC Director and/or other Brookings representatives and prospects; prepare background briefings and talking points for participants in these meetings; participate in meetings; plan and implement appropriate follow-up.
- Steward donors as appropriate; conduct follow-up work on all solicitation efforts; manage correspondence and contact with donors; move donors through the cultivation and solicitation process, including special events, mailings, and other activities as appropriate.
- Assess donor relations activities and needs; develop appropriate plans to meet needs; develop new strategies for stewarding donors, including benefits packages, volunteer opportunities, scholar meetings, and private events.
- Plan and implement special events and other outreach opportunities for prospects and donors; follow-up with participants.
- Draft and assemble funding proposals and reports in collaboration with relevant BDC and FP staff; manage review and approval of proposals.
- Track and coordinate fundraising efforts and contacts undertaken by BDC Director.
- Maintain complete files on funders, including correspondence and proposals.
- Manage all aspects of support related to BDC Corporate Council.
30% Coordination of Fundraising Efforts with FP Development Team
- Coordinate, collaborate, and communicate on all fundraising efforts with the FP development team; contribute to culture of open communication with free flow of information; maintain clear communication with FP Development team members on nature of gifts to BDC, acknowledgements, gift accounting and reporting, and deconflicting of information about prospects or potential funders.
- Participate in BDC weekly team meetings, regular FP development team meetings via conference call, and occasional Central Development office (DEV) conference calls as needed.
- Meet regularly with BDC Director to discuss and develop individual stewardship strategies to build and expand engagement.
- Maintain donor information in BDC database and/or Raiser’s Edge to track correspondence, meeting notes, proposals, and background information.
05% Accounting and Administrative
- Assist BDC Budget Manager with basic accounting and administrative tasks when required.
- Provide additional logistical and administrative support as directed.
