The John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution (Brookings) is accepting applications for a Fellow/Senior Fellow to serve as Director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center at the Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management in Beijing, China. The scholar should have a career track record of high-quality, independent academic and policy research. A well-established academic reputation in China is also preferred. At a minimum, the scholar will need to be able to navigate the Chinese policy and academic communities, produce high quality original scholarship and lead the Center's fundraising and outreach efforts. Ideally, the Director will have some familiarity with the operation of American think tanks and universities, and will have direct experience in managing research programs. The ideal candidate will also have experience engaging key external stakeholders on significant public policy matters, as well as governments, institutional partners, grant-making foundations, and the general public.

An advanced degree, specifically, a Ph.D. in a social science discipline such as economics, political science, international relations, public policy, urban studies, demographics, health care, or energy and environment is preferred. The successful candidate will have the ability to manage and grow the research and programmatic activities of the Center. Additionally, the successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience.

All qualified applicants will be considered; including those based overseas. Applicants must be fully comfortable working in the Chinese academic and policy environments. Fluency in English is required, along with a high degree of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and outstanding written and oral communication skills.

Appointment will be at the Fellow or Senior Fellow level, depending upon the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and will be comparable to that offered by American universities to faculty with equivalent background. Position is available in October, 2013.
