BASIC FUNCTION

To design and code graphics and interactive experiences for Brookings.edu, create figures and graphics for use in Brookings presentations; design and layout Brookings print publications, including reports, fact-sheets, and other miscellaneous printed items.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum bachelor’s degree required; degree in graphic design preferred. Minimum three years work experience designing for the web is required. Candidate must present online portfolio of work that shows versatile design aesthetic and examples of innovative and thoughtful web and print design.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must have thorough knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Familiarity with compatibility and cross-platform issues related to the major browsers, operating systems and industry best-practices related to print design and brand identity is a must. Candidate is required to have familiarity with optimizing graphics for online use and strategic understanding of social networks like Faceboook, Twitter and YouTube. Intermediate knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and/or Javascript is preferred. Experience with front-end development and developing templates for content management systems and a working knowledge of other aspects of web development and technologies, as they relate to design is preferred. Candidate must have excellent spoken, written, and visual communication with exceptional creativity, enthusiasm, sense of humor, team spirit, commitment, and professionalism. The ability to meet tough deadlines and juggle multiple projects is a must.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

70% Web Design

  • Create visuals and interactive experiences to support Brookings publications on the web.
  • Create comps, wireframes, and other materials necessary to guide the development of engaging Brookings content experiences.
  • Create miscellaneous graphics for the Brookings website, for use in site banners, interactive features, and other content.
  • Work closely with the Senior Interactive Designer to create compelling data visualizations in support of Brookings research.
  • Work with various staff to create infographics and other visualizations to be used strategically on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

30% Print & Other Design

  • Working in close conjunction with Brookings researchers and communications professionals, design and layout Brookings print reports, incorporating text, figures and photographs.
  • Develop a standard InDesign template to use for Brookings reports that adheres to Brookings style and branding guidelines.
  • Design visually appealing factsheets and handouts in support of Brookings publications.
  • Create graphics for use in Brookings Keynote and PowerPoint presentation.
