Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree highly preferred, ideally in international development, relations or relevant adjunct area of study. Coursework in the fields of communications or public relations also preferred but not required. At least six years experience in communications field, with academic research and writing methods/styles an advantage. Knowledge of the media community and leadership in communication strategies required. Experience in policy, diplomatic or educational working environment desirable. Ability to lead a small team is expected, as is ability to shift priorities with ease.
Knowledge Requirements
Entrepreneurial attitude required. Exemplary organizational ability, combined with extremely robust initiative and strong writing/communications skills. Self-starter, requiring minimal supervision. Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, mature judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong interest in international economics/affairs preferred if not a demonstrated field of study. High degree of familiarity with the latest communications technology, including proven experience with social media, from strategy to deliverables.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
30% Communications Strategy and Management:
Work with Communications Department, Vice President, and Deputy Director to formulate and execute overall communications strategy for Global
In close consultation with individual scholars, identify target audiences for variety of projects, events, and publications and identify concrete actions to disseminate effectively scholars’ work to a wide range of audiences for maximum impact
Work to cultivate and build the Global brand
Represent Global and advocate its interests within Brookings
Propose and implement measures to improve internal communications within Global, including ways to facilitate the flow of information, ideas, and data among scholars and other research staff
Directly manage team of up to three communications professionals within Global
40% Communications and Outreach:
Work with Communications Department to coordinate overall electronic media strategy, including conducting communications-related research, managing communications technology and managing contact database
Work with Global Online Communications Specialist to create content and update website, develop and distribute electronic newsletters and utilize other online tools, as needed
Identify opportunities for scholars to develop op-eds, policy briefs, letters to the editors, etc.; draft these written materials as necessary
Draft and edit, as needed, press releases, media advisories, event announcements, pitch letters, fact sheets and other press materials
Proactively engage target media and coordinate media relations with Communications Department, as needed
Engage external stakeholders, including policymakers, the private sector, and the academic and NGO communities via multiple communications tactics that are identified as part of the overall Global communications strategy
In close consultation with Global’s Director of Development and External Relations, craft messages and develop materials to better communicate with current and potential donors
20% Event Planning:
In close consultation with scholars, develop and organize major public events. This includes:
- Identifying speakers and topics
- Coordinating panels and participants
- Drafting correspondence and press releases
- Working with Communications Department to identify and engage media interest
Manage the execution of public events (roundtables, workshops, lecture series, etc.), and other meetings as necessary
Oversee and closely monitor event planning and execution by research and communications staff, directly support staff when necessary
10% Publications Production:
Develop concepts for publications and work with scholars and research staff to produce relevant and timely publications, including reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, books and other publications
