Fundraising & Communications Coordinator - Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy

The Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy (BTC) was established jointly by China’s Tsinghua University and the United States’ Brookings Institution, and is located at the Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management in Beijing. The Center is devoted to researching Chinese public policy issues and organizing policy roundtables, public lectures, private forums and discussions. The BTC seeks to hire staff in Beijing for the position described below.

Basic Function

Under the supervision of the Director of BTC (and/or Center Administrator), the Fundraising & Communications Coordinator develops and supports BTC plans to engage donors and media in the work of the Center.

Education/Experience Requirements

• Minimum B.A. in international relations/affairs, communications, or journalism; Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience; marketing or public relations experience preferred.
• Demonstrated keen interest in policy research and think tank environment.
• Excellent command of written and conversational Mandarin Chinese; fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
• Ability to multi-task and to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure.
• Self starter and team player with strong interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated ability to communicate well in a multi-cultural environment; ability to work well independently and yet value collaboration and teamwork.
• Initiative, mature judgment and self discipline, excellent organizational skills.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

50% Fundraising & Communication Strategy:

Work with Director to develop and implement fundraising strategy and identify prospects, and donors. Assist Director with the launch and monitoring of a Corporate Council; provide stewardship for Council members and prospects; support Director's efforts to solicit corporate members for the Council. Serve as liaison to BTC donors and prospects; assist Director in efforts to gain access to donors; set up meetings for and with donors and the Director. Represent the work of the BTC to current and potential funders. Working with other BTC staff, support proposal and accurate budget development for research projects; help transform project ideas into concrete proposals. Assist in strategy development positioning communication to support fund raising work; identify opportunities for scholars to develop op-eds, policy briefs, and letters to the editor; strategize to engage external stakeholders including the academic community and government policy makers. Work closely with and serve as communications liaison to China Center, Foreign Policy, and Brookings central communications staff.

20% Website Support:

Provide support and input into website content to ensure that high quality content is posted on the site in a timely fashion. Proofread materials and review translations to ensure quality and appropriateness. Contribute to and develop strategies to promote policy-driven products on the site, suitable for media reporting and editorial placement. Work closely with the SPPM of Tsinghua University, China Center, FP, and Brookings central communications staff to coordinate overall electronic media strategy and expand web presence.

20% Communication and Outreach Activities:

Seek and develop opportunities to partner with media on events and publications; reach out proactively to target media; develop and maintain issue-based media lists. Develop strategies to promote and track production of BTC publications with BTC scholars, and relevant Brookings and Tsinghua University staff. Develop marketing materials, event announcements, media memos and press releases, fact sheets, and other press materials. Adapt materials and publications to formats that can be readily used by various target audiences. Copy edit documents, articles, and Op-eds; provide positioning and placement of Op-eds in media outlets.

10% Event Planning and Support:

Assist Program Coordinator and other BTC staff as needed with event planning, logistics, and management; provide input into meeting agendas, speakers, topics, and all aspects of events as needed.
