Basic Function

Two year term limit position. Provide research assistance and administrative support in the Saban Center for Middle East Policy. At direction of Fellows, Senior Fellows, and/or Visiting Fellows, conduct research on Middle Eastern politics and US policy toward the Middle East. Monitor contemporary developments in the Middle East and in US policy, including using regional media sources and foreign language sources. Write analytical essays, bibliographies, and summaries on relevant topics. Working with other research assistants, supervise interns, assist with publications, and provide planning, logistical and administrative assistance for Saban Center events. Maintain ongoing contact with a range of government, scholarly, media, and other contacts working on relevant issues. Provide administrative, communications, and logistical support to Saban Center Fellows.

Education/Experience Requirements

M.A. in international affairs, political science, or related area with emphasis on Middle East politics (or B.A. in related subject with minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience); strong academic record, outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills demonstrated.

Knowledge Requirements

Background in and understanding of Middle Eastern affairs. Superior qualitative research, writing, and editing ability; excellent organizational and communication skills; proficiency in internet research and use of database programs; ability to prioritize in a heavy workload environment. Proficiency in Farsi , Arabic or Hebrew preferable. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel preferred.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

50% Research Assistance:

• Conducts relevant research as directed by supervisors.

• Keeps up with relevant literature as directed; monitors regional media and summarizes current developments in relevant research areas. 

• Collects and analyzes information; assembles relevant unclassified material including press reports, interviews, government data, documents, seminars, and reports from a wide variety of sources including library and internet searches, the local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, and others in the field.

• Writes summary reports, grant proposals, briefing memos, bibliographies, reports on forums, symposia, and conferences, and compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of books and articles.

• Attends and writes summary reports of outside policy briefings, forums, and symposia.

• Updates and checks existing data and footnotes; helps with editing and proofreading of publications.

• Provide general research support as needed.

50% Administrative Support:

• Assists in the Center’s large events such as forums, seminars, and workshops; works with programs staff of Saban Center, FP, and central Communications department to arrange various events.

• Schedules appointments and makes travel arrangements.

• Copy edits and proofreads as needed.

• Maintains contacts databases of officials, experts, journalists and regional actors relevant to Middle East policy work.

• Composes, types and edits letters and memos from verbal instruction.

• Maintains paper and electronic files and databases of materials on relevant topics.

• Provides general office assistance for the Saban Center as needed.
