Basic Function

Assists the Director of Strategic Development & External Affairs (DDev) and other Economic Studies staff involved in Development in implementing the fundraising goals and strategies for the Economic Studies Program. Assists with writing, prospect research, and overall coordination

Education/Experience Requirements

B.A. required, concentration in economics or social sciences preferred. Minimum 3 years professional experience. Strongly preferred: work experience in a fast-paced office environment

Knowledge Requirements

Knowledge of fundraising, preferably with foundations, corporations, and individuals. Superior writing skills, including proven ability to conceive and write complex grant proposals. Must be well-organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to set priorities and work independently, handle multiple tasks and deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Must demonstrate initiative, mature judgment, and be a good team-player. Excellent MS Word and Excel skills required, knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus; capacity to learn other types of software programs and familiarity with on-line research resources.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

40% Writing and Prospect Research

  • Drafts and packages funding proposals and donor correspondence with relevant scholars, DDev and other ES staff
  • Prompts and drafts correspondence to donors and prospects, including stewardship reports and proposal cover letters
  • Identifies and researches new donors for general and project or center support
  • Organizes meetings between ES scholars and prospective donors
  • Provides senior staff with background information, briefings, and talking points on gift opportunities
  • Gathers information on the latest ES research and drafts appropriate materials for varied donor audiences.

60% Coordination of Fundraising Efforts within ES and with Other Brookings Programs

  • Tracks and coordinates fundraising efforts and contacts undertaken by the ES VP/Director, Co-Director, DDev, and scholars; enters information into Raiser’s Edge.
  • In coordination with DEV staff, prompts scholars and DDev to follow up with donors and prospects as needed.
  • Supports the organization and management of private ES donor events, coordinating with other ES or CDEV staff where appropriate
  • Manages stewardship process for all current program donors.
  • Prepares information packets for funder and prospect meetings.
  • Coordinates review and approval in Sharepoint of funding proposals internally with the Executive Office, Development, and other relevant offices. Refers questions to appropriate ES financial manager.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate systems to ensure careful coordination of fundraising strategy, research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship within ES and, via the Development office, with other Brookings research programs
  • Maintains complete files on funders, including all copies of fundraising correspondence and proposals.
  • Schedules appointments and makes travel arrangements, prepares itineraries, arranges for reimbursement, and maintains records of travel expenses and billings.
  • Attend bi-weekly Development all-staff meetings
  • Take lead on special tasks as they arise.
