Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelors degree required. Minimum 2 years of professional experience in communications setting needed, preferably in public relations agency, trade association, or other political/policy environment, and at least one year required of related media/marketing experience. Must have strong understanding of marketing, web-based outreach and contact management systems. Must have strong interest or experience in economic policy issues. Strong interest in media relations or larger communications strategies preferred.
Knowledge Requirements
Basic knowledge of MS Word required; knowledge of Access and Excel preferred; ability to learn database systems. Strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, mature judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; articulate; strong writing skills preferred.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
50% Media Relations:
• Working with the Communications Director and the Office of Communications, engages and maintains relationships with key reporters, contact reporters about upcoming briefings and research announcements, and helps drive coverage of program activities
• Actively monitors and tracks media coverage of scholars in research program and working with the Communications Director, advises scholars on media opportunities
• Compiles and maintains up-to-date media lists through the database
• Assists with the writing and dissemination of press materials/media packets
• Working with the Communications Director, helps write/edit op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, factsheets, media memos and other media materials
• General support and assistance on various tasks as needed
15% Communications Assistance:
• Assists DCM in all matters related to the planning and implementation of the program’s overall communications strategy
• Works with project and center support staff within ES to coordinate outreach activities, including to Capitol Hill.
• Handles all general inquiries from the public regarding ES research and publications
• Manages Communications calendar and timelines for events and special projects
• Identifies opportunities (president’s budget release, tax filing, or other news hooks) for research staff to develop op-eds, policy briefs, letters to the editors, etc; proactively work with DCM and research staff to bring new content onto the calendar
• Requests information from team leaders and drafts weekly report to ES Leadership Team
• Helps draft monthly ES newsletter
15% Marketing and Product Dissemination:
• Works with DCM to identify key audience members (e.g., political, civic, business, constituent leaders) in major issue areas
• Helps develop marketing collateral, such as brochures, fact sheets, etc.
• Prepares cover letters and other electronic content to accompany our materials, in conjunction with DCM and research staff
• In collaboration with other ES staff, implements distribution of ES materials, including mailing of such products
• Manages product inventory (onsite shelves and offsite storage)
• Serves as lead contact to outside production firms and printing houses
• Responds to and manages requests for publications
• Reaches out to and manages critical partners for report releases
• Works with partners on joint, media-related activities
20% Event Planning:
• Assists with planning and implementing of selected public events
• Manages invitation and RSVP lists for events
• Organizes travel, hotel, catering, meeting rooms, contracts, and other logistical arrangements
• Handles post-meeting follow-up: billing, travel reimbursements, and thank you notes
• Responds to all correspondence for conference information
