Basic Function

Serves as key member of ECHCR communications/outreach team, assisting with media and communications activities and overseeing the ECHCR Web pages and newsletters. Works with ES Web Coordinator and the central Brookings Office of Communications web team.

Education/Experience Requirements

B.A required; degree in social sciences preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years work experience including Web site content management, writing, editing or proofreading experience preferred; experience in policy or educational environment desirable.

Knowledge Requirements

Demonstrated excellent organizational, communication and writing skills mandatory; ability to prioritize; ability to work under pressure with discretion and mature judgment; self-starter; must work well with others; interest in economic policy; proficiency with HTML and information architecture; familiarity with content management systems desirable; capacity to learn new applications; familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Camtasia Studio a plus.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

50% Design and management of Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform (ECHCR) Web pages and electronic communications:

• Using established content management system, creates, updates and maintains all ECHCR and project Web pages in accordance with Brookings Web site standards.

• Prepares articles, op-eds, Congressional testimony, expert profiles, and other Web content for publication.

• Writes short synopses of publications to accompany Web content; suggests accompanying photos if applicable.

• Performs regular editing of all ECHCR Web pages to maintain fresh content and communicates with staff assistants, research assistants and project directors on updating the content and of project and Center pages.

• Coordinates with ES Web coordinator on all online communications issues and attends regular meetings of the Brookings web team; Keeps the Outreach Director informed of new features and issues of concern; Interprets Web usage statistics, including electronic newsletter statistics, and creates graphs showing progress of program's pages to aid in evaluation of program web section in coordination with Web Strategist.

• Creates and distributes electronic newsletters using Lyris in conjunction with the Office of Communications.

• In coordination with ECHCR Outreach Director, advises on new strategies and tactics to improve overall web effectiveness and impact.

• Identifies ways to reach out to target Web sites that may feature or co-feature content and establishes new or ongoing relationships where possible, seeking guidance from ES Web Coordinator and the central Brookings Office of Communications.

• Collects and saves event information in Public Microsoft Office folder and SharePoint site.

• Formats documents, such as scholar biographies and CVs, into PDF and some publications in InDesign.

25% Assist with ECHCR communications and outreach:

• Working with the ECHCR Outreach Director, assists in implementation of communications strategy and tactics.

• Develops and maintains databases for ECHCR communications, including media, policymakers, key partners, and other stakeholders.

• Prepares newsletters, cover letters and other content to accompany materials, in conjunction with project staff and Outreach Director.

• Provides support for all ECHCR events, as needed, including logistics, media, and other activities as assigned.

• Works with project staff and Outreach Director to identify key audience members in major issue areas.

• Drafts reports of ECHCR activities, as needed.

25% Provide communications support for High-Value Health Care Project:

• Performs certain tasks including, but not limited to, support for the communications and Web activities of the High-Value Health Care Project
