Competitiveness

As emerging economies and existing powers seek competitive advantages, how can America retain its edge? If global integration is going be an enduring benefit for Americans—and receive their broad-based political support—the United States will need a sustained national agenda for remaining the world's most vibrant economy. Brookings’s institution-wide initiative on competitiveness integrates the global debate with developments at the local, state and federal levels.

Education

The economic and political well-being of any democracy requires a well-educated citizenry. Brookings’s work has extended beyond the so-called K-12 bookends to include pre-school interventions and issues in higher education. Experts are tackling fundamental issues on the role of education in the national and global economy.

Energy Security

Energy security is one of the most important strategic challenges facing the United States and the world. Energy security cuts across many sectors—economic, environmental and national security. With its Energy Security Initiative and other activities, Brookings is uniquely positioned to tackle energy in a comprehensive and integrated manner, guiding effective, pragmatic policies to address U.S. and global energy security issues over the next decade.

Health Care

Brookings is committed to producing innovative policy solutions to our nation’s most difficult challenges. The country may face no more important domestic policy challenge than the much-needed reform of our health care system. Through an institution-wide effort, Brookings delivers new ideas and offers policy solutions to improve health care both at home and globally.

Migration

Migration is an issue that bridges Brookings’s expertise in domestic and foreign policy. In the United States, reforming immigration policy remains a subject of intense political debate. Globally, the unprecedented movement of people across borders raises issues in both industrialized countries and the developing world.

New Thinking on Five Key Challenges

Today’s most pressing challenges are also the most complex. Brookings’s five priority research areas—competitiveness, education, energy securityhealth care and migration—bridge the local and the global, the public and the private, the political and the economic and the hard and the soft sciences. Developing shared solutions will require not just new ideas, but an ability to get beyond traditional ways of viewing major issues.

With our unrivaled breadth and depth, Brookings has a special responsibility to tackle these issues. We bring together an interdisciplinary team of economists, political analysts, demographers and former government officials to develop new information and practical recommendations. With independent thinking that goes beyond the boundaries of domestic and foreign policy, new work on these five policy areas is urgently needed—and uniquely Brookings.
