In Hokkaido, Japan, leaders of the Group of Eight major industrial democracies endorsed cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050, but stopped short of setting short-term targets. President George W. Bush hailed the agreement and joined other G8 leaders stating that this was a step forward. They also called on developing nations like China and India to play a role in reducing emissions. Summit attendees are also addressing the world food crisis, fighting global poverty and the nuclear standoff with Iran. Brookings scholars examine the issues.
