Over five decades, the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) has focused on deterring military conflict on the Korean peninsula while neglecting to develop a more comprehensive bilateral relationship. On January 5, the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at Brookings and the Center for U.S.-Korea Policy at The Asia Foundation hosted leading experts for a conference on prospects for expanding the U.S.-ROK partnership.

CNAPS is accepting applications for its Visiting Fellows program for Autumn 2010 and Spring 2011. The autumn term is August 16-December 17, 2010 and is open to citizens of China, Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia; the application deadline for the autumn term is February 15, 2010. In both sessions CNAPS will give preference to research proposals on "challenges of cross-border crime."

On November 10, the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at Brookings hosted co-authors Kongdan Oh and Ralph Hassig for a discussion of their new book The Hidden People of North Korea: Everyday Life in the Hermit Kingdom. Drawing on decades of scholarship and experience, the speakers discussed aspects of life in North Korea and the ways in which the outside world can reach everyday North Koreans so that they can make decisions based on truth rather than propaganda.
